Sanjush Lingamaneni Accident: Why the Case Is Drawing Political Comparisons With Appalaraju’s Son’s Case

Hyderabad Accident Case: The fatal road accident involving Lingamaneni Sanjush, son of Jana Sena Rajya Sabha MP Lingamaneni Ramesh, has triggered a political debate over accountability, police action and whether influential families receive the same treatment as ordinary citizens.

Sanjush was allegedly driving an Aston Martin when it hit 26-year-old Bharathi Mukhi near Inorbit Mall in Hyderabad on August 16. Bharathi, a Lifestyle employee, suffered serious injuries and later died at Apollo Hospital. Police registered a case alleging rash and negligent driving.

Why Is This Case Politically Sensitive?

The case has attracted particular attention because Sanjush is the son of a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from the Jana Sena Party, which is part of the ruling alliance in Andhra Pradesh.

Although the accident happened in Hyderabad, Telangana, and therefore comes under Telangana Police, the political identity of the accused has brought the case into the national and Telugu political spotlight.

Initially, questions were raised over why Sanjush had not been immediately arrested. Police had booked the case and reportedly detained him on the day of the accident, while medical and other investigations were undertaken.

However, the situation changed on August 20, when Madhapur police arrested Sanjush in connection with the fatal accident.

Appalaraju Case: A Different State, But a Similar Political Question

The Sanjush case is now being compared on social media with the recent case involving Aarav Varma, son of former YSRCP minister Seediri Appalaraju, in Andhra Pradesh.

But there is a crucial difference: the two incidents happened in different states and are being investigated by different police forces.

The Appalaraju case arose in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh after a 45-year-old shepherd, Danayya, died after being hit by a motorcycle allegedly ridden by Aarav. Police later alleged that attempts were made to shield Aarav and initially implicate another person. Aarav was arrested, and his father was subsequently taken into custody over allegations including harbouring his son and attempting to influence or alter the investigation.

Those allegations are part of the Andhra Pradesh investigation and cannot automatically be equated with the Hyderabad case.

The Political Question Is About Equal Treatment

This is where the political debate becomes sharper.

When the accused in a serious accident case is connected to a powerful political family, the public naturally asks whether the law is being applied with the same urgency and strictness that would be expected in a case involving an ordinary citizen.

In the Appalaraju case, the Andhra Pradesh government faced criticism from YSRCP leaders, who alleged political vendetta, while police maintained that there was evidence of attempts to protect the accused and interfere with the investigation.

Now, with Sanjush being the son of a Jana Sena MP, similar questions are being raised from a different political direction.

No Room for Double Standards

The key issue should not be whether the accused belongs to Jana Sena, YSRCP or any other political party.

The real question is whether the same standards of investigation, accountability and due process are applied irrespective of political connections.

The Hyderabad police have now arrested Sanjush, meaning the immediate question of whether there would be police action has been answered. The focus should now move to whether the investigation is transparent and whether the evidence is examined without political influence.

At the same time, comparing the two cases should not mean assuming that the circumstances are identical. The Appalaraju case includes separate allegations concerning attempts to shield the accused, while Sanjush has maintained that he did not flee and that he cooperated with police.

The Bigger Political Test

For both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, such cases carry a larger message.

Political power should not become a shield from the law — but political pressure should not become a reason to bypass due process either.

In the end, the courts and investigating agencies must establish the facts. What the public will be watching closely is whether the law treats the son of a powerful politician exactly as it would treat anyone else involved in a fatal road accident.

That is the real test of “equal justice.”
